Qui aurait pu croire en une telle diversité de comportements reproducteurs au sein de cette petite mer d’eau douce qu’est le lac Tanganyika ? Certainement tous ces scientifiques qui n’ont pas hésité à passer des années entières sur place à étudier tous ces comportements. Mais nous n’en sommes qu’au début. Tout est loin d’avoir été exploré car même si on est en droit d’estimer à sa juste valeur le travail de ces scientifiques, il faut bien réaliser que leur champ d’investigation n’a porté que sur quelques centaines de mètres carrés repartis sur trois ou quatre sites. De plus, leurs observations se sont uniquement portées sur les vingt premiers mètres à compter de la surface. On ne saurait alors prendre le risque d’appliquer les résultats actuels aux espèces qui n’ont pu entrer dans ce champ d’investigation. Prudence donc à toute généralisation excessive. En effet, sur les quelques 200 espèces de Cichlidés endémiques du lac, même si on connaît dans les grandes lignes le mode de reproduction de 70% d’entre-elles, seules une quarantaine ont fait l’attention d’une étude approfondie. Que nous réservent les 160 autres ? Il existe même encore certaines espèces benthiques dont le type de reproduction nous est complètement inconnu. Il est cependant peu probable que l’on y découvre des comportements radicalement différents de ceux sus-cités mais probablement des comportements intermédiaires révélant un commensalisme encore plus important que supposé jusqu’alors. Les aquariophiles ne doivent pas rester en marge de ces avancées scientifiques car bien des comportements observés en aquarium sont le reflet (même pâle) de ce qui se passe en milieu naturel. Reste qu’il faille permettre à nos hôtes la possibilité de s’exprimer en leur offrant de l’espace, un biotope adapté et une nourriture conforme à leurs besoins. Beaucoup de questions restent en suspens comme le pourquoi de la non reproduction en aquarium de la race bleue du Neolamprologus sexfasciatus. Cette inconnue est certainement due à notre manque d’observation, au non respect de leurs besoins naturels. Le rôle du patron de coloration des races géographiques comme critère sélectif dans le choix du partenaire sexuel est aussi difficile à analyser et toutes les ébauches d’études en ce sens n’ont permis de dégager aucune conclusion probante (Seehausen & al., 1999). Comme quoi, quelle que soit notre compétence dans ce domaine, nous n’avons pas fini d’en apprendre.
